A Sage espresso machine needs a minute of care after each coffee session and a longer program when it asks for one. This guide covers the seven Sage machines we sell: the Barista Express, Barista Express Impress, Barista Pro, Barista Touch Impress, Oracle Jet, Oracle Dual Boiler and the Dual Boiler with Smart Grinder Pro (the Dynamic Duo). Every step and interval below comes from Sage's own user guides and product pages; where models differ, we say which.
Your machine's user guide always comes first. If something below differs from it, follow the guide.
In short
- After every milk drink: wipe and purge the steam wand.
- After every coffee session: rinse the portafilter and, on the Oracle Jet and Oracle Dual Boiler, run a clear water backflush.
- When the machine asks: the cleaning cycle with Sage's cleaning powder, The Group Head Cleaner.
- Every 3 months: a new water filter.
- When the machine asks, or on schedule: descaling with Sage descaling powder.
- Never: the dishwasher. Sage asks you to wash every part by hand.
Every day
- Steam wand. Every Sage guide says the same: clean the wand after texturing milk. Wipe it with a damp cloth and let it steam briefly over the drip tray to clear the milk from inside. If the holes in the tip block, use the pin on the supplied cleaning tool; if that does not help, remove the tip with the spanner in the tool and soak it in hot water.
- Clear water backflush. For the Oracle Jet and the Oracle Dual Boiler, Sage recommends a backflush with clean water after each coffee session, before you switch off: put the cleaning disc in the filter basket, lock in the portafilter and run water through it. On the Oracle Dual Boiler that is about 20 seconds.
- Drip tray. Empty and rinse it regularly, and always when the full indicator shows (on the Barista Pro and Dual Boiler: "Empty Me!").
- Water tank. Fresh water every day; the Barista Pro guide says it in so many words.
The cleaning cycle: when the machine asks
The cleaning cycle backflushes the group head with a cleaning agent to remove coffee oils. It is separate from descaling. Each model signals it in its own way:
| Machine | Signal | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Barista Express | CLEAN ME light | 1 CUP basket, cleaning disc, one sachet of The Group Head Cleaner; cycle of about 5 minutes |
| Barista Express Impress | CLEAN / DESCALE light flashes | 1 CUP basket, cleaning disc, one sachet of The Group Head Cleaner; about 5 minutes |
| Barista Pro | FLUSH on the display | Cleaning disc in the basket, a sachet of The Group Head Cleaner on the disc; start FLUSH from the menu |
| Barista Touch Impress | Message on the screen | Group head cleaning powder on the rubber cleaning disc; Sage suggests every 2 to 4 weeks with daily use |
| Oracle Jet | Message on the screen | The Group Head Cleaner; also from Settings |
| Oracle Dual Boiler | Message on the screen | The Group Head Cleaner; also from Settings, Group Head Clean |
| Dual Boiler (Dynamic Duo) | CLEAN ME! after 200 extractions | Cleaning disc and one sachet of The Group Head Cleaner in the 1 CUP basket; cycle of 370 seconds |
Sage's current cleaning product is The Group Head Cleaner, single-dose sachets of powder; cleaning tablets are the older way. On its product page, Sage lists The Group Head Cleaner for all seven machines in this guide: the Barista Express (BES875), Barista Express Impress (BES876), Barista Pro (BES878), Barista Touch Impress (BES882), Oracle Jet (BES985), Oracle Dual Boiler (BES995) and Dual Boiler (BES920). We have it in packs of 6 sachets and 12 sachets.
Descaling
Scale builds up faster with hard water and slows down flow, heating and taste. How often you descale depends on your water and on your use of the filter. What Sage says per model:
| Machine | Does it remind you? | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Barista Express | No | Sage gives an interval in the user guide based on your water hardness; keep track yourself |
| Barista Express Impress | Yes: CLEAN / DESCALE light stays on | Descale coffee, steam and hot water in turn, then rinse with a full tank |
| Barista Pro | Yes: DESCALE on the display | Three stages (coffee, hot water, steam), then a rinse cycle |
| Barista Touch Impress | Yes: pop-up message | Sage recommends descaling every 1 to 2 months; start from Settings, Descale cycle |
| Oracle Jet | Yes: message on the screen | Follow the steps on the screen |
| Oracle Dual Boiler | Yes: message on the screen | Also from Settings, Descale |
| Dual Boiler (Dynamic Duo) | Not described in the guide | Descale menu only; let the machine cool for at least 4 hours, the boilers are drained, about 20 minutes plus flushing |
General rules from the user guides:
- Remove the water filter from the tank before you add the descaler.
- On the Barista Express, Express Impress and Dual Boiler, one sachet of Sage descaling powder goes into 1 liter of water. The Barista Pro has a DESCALE line on the tank, and the touchscreen models walk you through it on the screen.
- Do not use bottled water for descaling (Barista Express Impress and Barista Touch Impress guides).
- Never remove or completely empty the water tank during the cycle (Barista Express and Barista Touch Impress guides).
- For the Dual Boiler, Sage adds that any maintenance other than cleaning should be done by an authorized Sage service center.
Water filter and water hardness
Each of these machines uses a water filter in the tank. Test your tap water with the hardness test strip, enter the result in the machine where it asks for it, and replace the filter every 3 months. On the Barista Express and the Dual Boiler, Sage adds a volume: 40 liters, or 60 liters in a soft water area (hardness level 2). In hard water, change it more often. Sage says regular filter changes reduce the need to descale.
The ClaroSwiss water filter is Sage's replacement filter; Sage lists it for every machine in this guide and says to replace it every 90 days. If your test strip shows 4 or 5, the Barista Touch Impress, Oracle Jet and Oracle Dual Boiler guides strongly recommend another water source. Never use distilled or very low-mineral water, which Sage warns affects the taste.
The grinder
Coffee oils and fines build up on the burrs over time. On the Barista Express Impress, Barista Pro, Barista Touch Impress, Oracle Jet, Oracle Dual Boiler and Smart Grinder Pro, the routine is the same: empty the bean hopper, run the grinder until it is empty, unplug, remove the hopper and the upper burr, brush both burrs and the grind outlet, and reassemble. Take care: Sage warns that the burrs are very sharp.
- Barista Touch Impress: Sage suggests cleaning the hopper and grind chamber every two weeks, and the grinder every quarter if you use dark, oily roasts.
- Oracle Dual Boiler: whole roasted beans only; never green or under-roasted beans.
- Barista Express: the guide only describes an advanced procedure, for a blockage between the burrs and the grinder outlet. The Express Impress guide has the same advanced procedure next to the routine one.
- Smart Grinder Pro: wash the hopper, lid and grinds container by hand; no alkaline or abrasive cleaners.
What not to do
- No dishwasher for any part or accessory. Warm water and a mild dish soap, by hand.
- No abrasive cleaners, steel wool or scouring pads on the outside.
- No descaling with the water filter still in the tank.
- No cleaning agents other than the ones your guide names in the cleaning or descaling cycle.

Learn the routine at OR Academy
Cleaning is part of good espresso, and it is easier when someone shows you once. The Home Barista Workshop at OR Academy is a group session on espresso and milk, and a good moment to ask about your machine's routine. With several of our Sage machines a place is included, as stated on their product pages. Dates and locations are in the workshop calendar.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I backflush with a cleaning agent?
When the machine asks. On the Dual Boiler that is after 200 extractions; for the Barista Touch Impress, Sage suggests every 2 to 4 weeks with daily home use. Clear water backflushes in between are fine and, on the Oracle machines, recommended after every session.
My Barista Express never asks to descale. Is that normal?
Yes. Sage's guide for the Barista Express says the machine does not remind you; you follow the interval for your water hardness yourself.
Can I skip descaling if I use the filter?
The filter reduces the need, but does not remove it. Sage's Oracle Dual Boiler guide still recommends descaling when you see scale in the water tank.
Can I use cleaning products from another brand?
Sage's guides are written around Sage's own cleaning products and descaler; for the cleaning cycle that is now The Group Head Cleaner. We stick to what Sage names for your machine.
How we wrote this guide
Every step and interval comes from Sage's European user guides for the Barista Express (SES875), Barista Express Impress (SES876), Barista Pro (SES878), Barista Touch Impress (SES882), Oracle Jet (SES985), Oracle Dual Boiler (SES995), Dual Boiler (SES920) and Smart Grinder Pro (BCG820), and from Sage's product pages for The Group Head Cleaner, The Machine Descaler and the ClaroSwiss water filter, all checked on 22 October 2026. Which machines The Group Head Cleaner works with comes from the "Works with" list on Sage's product page; where an older guide still mentions a cleaning tablet, we follow that list. We have added nothing that Sage does not state. Intervals differ per model; your machine's guide takes precedence.
