JURA W4 review: black coffee for small spaces

JURA W4 review: black coffee for small spaces

The JURA W4 makes black coffee and nothing else, in a body 29.5 cm wide: espresso, coffee and lungo, each at the touch of one of six buttons. It is the JURA professional for a reception desk, a practice or a small coffee corner where nobody asks for milk.

The JURA W4 comes in one version, with a 3 liter tank. That simplicity is the point: no milk system to clean, no plumbing, and a machine that fits where a larger one would not.

Our verdict

  • Best at: a waiting room, a dental or medical practice, a small agency: places where people drink espresso or coffee without milk.
  • Right size for: a team of about 15 people. JURA recommends its W line for up to 50 cups a day.
  • Pick something else if: someone wants a cappuccino (the W8 has the same footprint with milk), or you need more volume and a bigger tank (the X4).
  • Plan for: refilling the 3 liter tank and emptying the grounds container, about 25 servings, during a busy day.

W4 or W8: the one question to ask

The W4 and W8 share the same body (29.5 × 44.3 × 44.6 cm), the same P.A.G.2 grinder and the same 3 liter tank. The W8 adds a milk system and 17 specialties; the W4 keeps to espresso, coffee and lungo. If nobody in the team drinks milk, the W4 saves you a daily cleaning step and a milk cooler on the counter. If a few people do, the W8 is worth it.

What it makes

JURA builds the W4 around three brewing processes: espresso, coffee and lungo, each with its own button next to the 3.5 inch color display. There is hot water as well, at three temperature levels, for tea. For each drink you set the water quantity, the coffee strength (10 levels) and the brewing temperature (3 levels).

That short menu is an advantage in a waiting room: visitors see a few clear choices and get a good black coffee without reading a screen.

Grinder and settings

The P.A.G.2 grinder grinds fresh for every cup from a 500 g bean container, and the brewing unit takes between 5 and 16 g of coffee. When we install a W4, we set grind and strength with the first bag of our Houseblend, a full-bodied espresso blend with low acidity and notes of dark chocolate and cacao nibs, and adjust the three drinks before anyone uses it.

One grinder means one coffee in the hopper. For the occasional decaf, the W4 has a powder chute: add a dose of our Colombia Sugar Cane Specialty Decaf, also available ground, and brew one cup.

Living with it

With no milk system, the W4 is one of the simplest JURA professional machines to keep clean. The daily routine:

  • Empty the grounds container and the drip tray while the machine is switched on, so it registers that they are empty.
  • Top up the 3 liter tank with fresh water.

The grounds container holds about 25 servings, so at 50 cups a day it needs emptying at least twice. The drip tray is monitored, and the rinsing, cleaning and descaling programs are built in; the display tells you when to run them. The CLARIS Pro Smart+ filter cartridge and 3-phase cleaning tablets come with the machine. Both the bean container and the water tank can be locked, which matters in a space where visitors serve themselves.

Payment and connectivity

For a coworking space or a shared building where coffee is paid for, JURA lists Smart Connect, Wi-Fi Connect, Payment Connect and MDB Connect for the W4, with the MDB Interface 2.0 as an option, plus Pocket Pilot 2.0 for cashless payment and accounting and the Data Communicator. These are accessories, not standard equipment: tell us in your quote request how people should pay.

How many people is it for?

JURA recommends the W line for up to 50 cups a day. At about 3.3 cups per person per working day, that is a team of around 15 people. In a waiting room the count works differently: think in visitors per day, and remember that the tank and grounds container set the rhythm of refills.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Narrow: 29.5 cm wide.
  • No milk system, so very little daily cleaning.
  • Espresso, coffee and lungo at one touch, plus hot water.
  • Lockable bean container and water tank.
  • Ready for payment systems via MDB.

Cons

  • No milk drinks.
  • 3 liter tank and grounds container of about 25 servings need regular attention.
  • No fixed water connection.

When another JURA fits better

  • Same footprint, with milk: the W8. Read our JURA W8 review.
  • More black coffee, bigger tank or a water connection: the X4 (5 liter tank) and X4c (water supply), for up to 80 cups a day. Tall cups up to 153 mm fit too. Read our JURA X4 and X4c review.

Buying a W4 through OR Coffee

OR Coffee is listed by Bodart, the Belgian JURA importer, as an approved dealer for JURA professional machines. You can taste and try the W4 before you decide: at our roastery in Wetteren, or at your place. Once you order, we deliver and install it, set it up with the 2 × 1 kg of Houseblend that comes with it, and do a tasting of our coffees with your team on site.

You can buy the machine outright, lease or rent it per month, or ask for a fixed price per cup that covers machine and coffee. We work out the formula that fits in the quote.

Frequently asked questions

Can the W4 make cappuccino?

No. It makes espresso, coffee and lungo, and hot water. For milk drinks in the same footprint, choose the W8.

What do we need on site?

A stable counter, a power socket and a tap or kitchen nearby to fill the tank. No plumbing or drain.

Can visitors pay for a coffee?

The W4 is ready for it via MDB Connect, Payment Connect or Pocket Pilot 2.0. The payment hardware or software is a separate item that we include in the quote.

Can we try it before we buy?

Yes. We set up a tasting and demo at our roastery in Wetteren, or we come to you.

Want a quote or a demo? Request one on the JURA W4 page. Tell us roughly how many people or visitors drink coffee each day, and we come back with the formula that fits. A tasting before you decide is possible at our roastery in Wetteren or at your place; delivery, installation and a tasting with your team come with the machine.

How we wrote this review

Every number in this article comes from JURA's official European product page for the W4 Dark Inox (EA, article 15542), the pages of the W8 (15550) and X4 (15762) for the comparison, and JURA's workplace guide for the daily output, checked on 22 October 2026. The demo, installation, setup and tasting describe how OR Coffee sells and delivers these machines. Our own measurements (cup temperature, noise, time per cup) will follow; we will add them here and mark them as ours. For daily and weekly care, see our JURA professional cleaning guide.
