JURA GIGA X3 and X3c review: one coffee, 150 cups

JURA GIGA X3 and X3c review: one coffee, 150 cups

The JURA GIGA X3 takes the GIGA's double engine, two pumps and two thermoblock heating systems, and pairs it with a single grinder and a 1 kg bean container, for up to 150 cups a day. It is the JURA for places that pour more than an X-line machine can handle but serve one house coffee.

There are two versions. The JURA GIGA X3 runs from a 5 liter tank. The JURA GIGA X3c is permanently connected to the water supply through a 3/4 inch thread. At this volume, that difference weighs more than on a smaller machine.

Our verdict

  • Best at: a canteen, a coworking floor, a hotel breakfast or a conference room where many people drink the same coffee, often at the same moment.
  • Right size for: a team of about 45 people. JURA positions the GIGA X3 for up to 150 cups a day.
  • Pick something else if: you want a decaf or a second blend next to the house coffee (the GIGA X8 has two grinders), or you stay under 80 cups a day (an X10 is enough).
  • Plan for: a tap with a 3/4 inch thread for the X3c, or regular tank refills on the X3; and someone who empties the grounds container several times a day.

GIGA X3 or X3c: the one choice to make

At 150 cups a day, water is the bottleneck. A 5 liter tank on the GIGA X3 is generous, but at full output someone refills it several times a day. The GIGA X3c removes that task: it is plumbed in with a 3/4 inch thread, a larger fitting than the 3/8 inch used on the X line, so check the tap before you plan the spot.

The X3c is also narrower: 32 cm wide against 37 cm for the X3, both 55.5 cm high and 49.7 cm deep. If the machine stands in a counter niche, those 5 cm count. Choose the X3 when there is no tap within reach or the machine has to move; choose the X3c in every other case.

What it makes, and why two pumps matter

The GIGA X3 makes the full range of black and milk coffees, with the Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.) for short coffees and a lungo function for long ones. What sets it apart from an X-line machine is inside: two high-performance 15 bar pumps, two thermoblocks and two separate fluid systems. That double setup is built for peak moments, when a single-system machine would make people wait.

For each drink you set the water quantity, the coffee strength (10 levels), the milk and milk foam temperature (10 levels), the brewing temperature (3 levels) and the hot water temperature (3 levels). On the 4.3 inch touchscreen you can position, duplicate and personalize drinks, so the menu shows what your team actually drinks.

Grinder and settings

The GIGA X3 has an electronically adjustable ceramic disc grinder with Automatic Grinder Adjustment (A.G.A.), which JURA describes as an electronically controlled readjustment system. It draws from a 1 kg bean container with an aroma preservation cover, and the brewing unit takes 5 to 16 g per cup.

When we install a GIGA X3 or X3c, we set the grind and strength with the first bag of our Houseblend, a full-bodied espresso blend with low acidity and notes of dark chocolate and cacao nibs, and adjust the main drinks before the first rush. With one grinder, the house coffee is the only coffee, so it is worth getting it right. For most teams that is Houseblend, also as a subscription that brings your beans every month; for an organic house coffee, take our Close To Nature Blend, sweet, smooth and round, with milk or black.

Milk

The HP3 milk system with interchangeable CX2 milk spout switches automatically between milk and milk foam. The dual spout adjusts from 70 to 159 mm, the separate hot-water spout from 69 to 165 mm, and the dual spout comes apart in a few steps for cleaning. Milk is drawn from a carton or a cooler next to the machine; a JURA Cool Control is sold separately. Milk system cleaning is automatic at one touch, with the cleaning container and mini tabs in the box.

Living with it

A GIGA X3 is built for traffic, and so is its care routine. Each day:

  • Empty the grounds container, about 40 servings, while the machine is switched on. At 150 cups a day that is three to four times.
  • Empty the drip tray; it is monitored, comes out easily and is dishwasher-proof.
  • Top up the 5 liter tank (GIGA X3 only).
  • Run the milk system cleaning after the last milk drink.

Rinsing, cleaning and descaling programs are built in, JURA's hygiene is TÜV-certified, and the CLARIS Pro Smart+ filter cartridge in the box treats the water. Original JURA cleaning tablets and milk system cleaner are what the programs are made for.

Payment and connectivity

For a canteen where coffee is paid for, or a facility team that wants to see consumption, JURA lists Smart Connect, Wi-Fi Connect and Payment Connect, with Pocket Pilot 2.0 for cashless payment and central monitoring and the Data Communicator for telemetry. On the X3c, JURA supplies the transmitter as standard. The rest are accessories that we include in the quote when you need them. The machine also shows preparations per drink and has a resettable day counter.

How many people is it for?

JURA positions the GIGA X3 for up to 150 cups a day. At about 3.3 cups per person per working day, that is a team of around 45 people. The two pumps help at peaks, but one machine still serves one person at a time: if 40 people come out of a meeting together, two machines in two places will serve them faster than one larger machine.

Pros and cons

Buying a GIGA X3 through OR Coffee

OR Coffee is listed by Bodart, the Belgian JURA importer, as an approved dealer for JURA professional machines. You can taste and try the GIGA X3 before you decide: at our roastery in Wetteren, or at your place. Once you order, we deliver and install the GIGA X3 or X3c, set it up with the 2 × 1 kg of Houseblend that comes with it, and do a tasting of our coffees with your team on site.

You can buy the machine outright, lease or rent it per month, or ask for a fixed price per cup that covers machine and coffee. At 150 cups a day the coffee is a large part of the cost, so we work out the formula in the quote.

Frequently asked questions

How many people is the GIGA X3 for?

About 45. JURA positions it for up to 150 cups a day, and an office drinks about 3.3 cups per person per working day.

Can it run two different coffees?

No. It has one grinder and one 1 kg bean container. For two beans side by side, choose the GIGA X8 or X8c.

What do we need on site for the X3c?

A water tap with a 3/4 inch thread within reach, a socket that can take 2700 W, and room to empty the grounds container and drip tray. Tell us what is there and we check the setup with you.

How is it different from the X10?

The GIGA X3 has two pumps and two thermoblocks, a 1 kg bean container and a 4.3 inch touchscreen, for up to 150 cups a day. The X10 has one of each, makes cold brew, and is rated for up to 80 cups.

Can we try it before we buy?

Yes. We set up a tasting and demo at our roastery in Wetteren, or we come to you.

Want a quote or a demo? Request one on the JURA GIGA X3 page or the JURA GIGA X3c page. Tell us how many people drink coffee, when the peaks are and whether there is a tap nearby, and we come back with the version and formula that fit. A tasting before you decide is possible at our roastery in Wetteren or at your place; delivery, installation and a tasting with your team come with the machine.
